About Leicester

Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England, with continuous settlement going back to the Iron Age. The Roman town of Ratae Corieltauvorum stood here from around AD 50, and many of the modern street patterns still trace the lines of Roman foundations. Through the medieval period it grew around the castle, the abbey and the leather trade, and the Victorian boom transformed it into a major industrial hub for hosiery, footwear and engineering.
